A Jolt…

Good morning guys. How did the week go?

I want to share a very sobering thought. Promise you won’t freak out? Here goes…

It is perhaps the weirdest thing you do.

It was your birthday a few days ago, full of excitement, you share your testimony with friends and loved ones. The Good Lord has added one more year to your life you say. I don’t mean to rain on your parade but I have a question- Did He? Did God really add a year to your life?

I have no idea where we got this incremental view of life from but I know that it is the reason behind the tragic fashion in which we live our lives. Here is the hard truth- Life does not increase, it reduces! Your age may increase but your time here on earth is dwindling. It is as though we view our lives as an hour glass in reverse!

Friend, if you are 25 years old, your life is less 25 years! Take a moment to take that in. It is a sobering revelation especially when you consider that no man knows exactly the number of days allotted to him. The thought just hit me one day… ‘You’re dying’. In typical African style, I retorted ‘God forbid’! However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized it to be true. We are all dying, for some it will just come sooner. This goes against the grain of our daily thought where life is an assumption and tomorrow is taken for granted.

What is the implication of this? Time is life and life is time. If you waste your time, you are wasting your life. I am hardly a stuck up guy but in the light of this truth, I have to ask myself some serious questions. All those hours in front of the TV? On BB? At work? In traffic? Sleeping? Fooling around? These things are taking bits of my life that I cannot get back. This does not mean we should adopt any extreme measures (like not sleeping anymore…if you can), it just means that you want to be sure that the thing getting the most of your time (a.k.a life) is really what you want to be doing. I hear people talk a lot about the things that matter to them the most in life but when their time usage is audited, there is hardly ever a correlation.

My point exactly? We really ought to stop talking and start living. Each man must sit down and figure out what his/her life is about and then begin to put time into it. Your time usage is a mirror of your purpose. If you spend all your time idling, you’re a couch potato; talking? You’re a chatterbox; sleeping? And you’re a Sloth. Pretty simple! ‘You’re young and have all the time in the world’ is a terrible myth.

Procrastination they say, is the thief of time. I say it is not a thief, it is a murderer! It takes your life! Seeing as you are the one procrastinating, then it is equivalent to suicide! Guess you never really thought about it this way huh?

Take some time (life) to think about it. Time is a precious gift, make it count.

… I suppose in the strict sense we can all say “Of course, I knew this!”, but in truth we all probably require a minute or more to really let it sink. We sincerely need to reevaluate out priorities and accord time …oops, life, to what really matters!
Above all, I personally need to remind myself it’s a little everyday. We usually get caught up in the euphoria of an exciting idea only to realize we didn’t sustain it beyond 3 days… It’s one step each day towards being the me I want to be, and the journey is sometimes more important than the destination, because we need to be ready to handle where we eventually make home!!

  3. A wake up or a live life call; whichever we call it, there’s certainly a need to be more aware!… Nice read!

  4. You’re right, I really never thought about it like that. Thanks for the nudge.
